Registering Your Motorcycle in Pennsylvania

Before you go motorcycle riding in Pennsylvania (PA), you will need to complete the motorcycle registration process for your bike.

Proof of insurance and your drivers license are required. Bring these two documents with you to the nearest Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) service center. PennDOT will review your motorcycle insurance to ensure that you have liability coverage. Make sure that your motorcycle insurance identification card includes:

  • The name of the company that provides insurance coverage for your motorcycle.
  • Your motorcycle insurance policy number.
  • Effective or start date of the motorcycle insurance policy.
  • Expiration or end date of the motorcycle insurance policy.
If you are registering a motor-driven cycle (i.e. moped) that does not exceed five brake horsepower, your drivers license must have a Class M, “8” restriction on it.  An owner of a motorcycle that can exceed five brake horsepower must have a Class M designation on it; the “8” restriction is not required.

Registration fees for motor-driven cycles are $9. Motorcycle registration fees are set at $18. After you pay the registration fee, complete the registration form. Provide data such as:

  • Your name.
  • Residential street mailing address.
  • Your motorcycle’s vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Title number.
  • Year and make of the motorcycle.
  • Your insurance provider’s name.
  • Start and end dates of your motorcycle insurance coverage.
Typically it takes 10 days to receive your vehicle registration card in the mail. Initial motorcycle registrations must be completed in person.

Registering Other Bikes

Mopeds and scooters do not have to be registered as motorcycles in PA if their brake horsepower does not exceed 1.5. Whether a moped or scooter is designed with an automatic transmission or with a battery, they are not to exceed 25 miles per hour.
