Defining and Registering Motorcycles in Massachusetts

A bike is considered to be a motorcycle - and needs to be registered - in Massachusetts if it:

  • Contains a seat or saddle for the rider.
  • Has a maximum of three wheels on the ground.
  • Has a certificate of origin that identifies its body type as a motorcycle.
  • Has been certified by the manufacturer to meet federal motorcycle safety standards.

Other Kinds of Bikes

Motorcycles are pretty straightforward, but there are other kinds of bikes that might cause some confusion.

Mopeds

A moped is defined as any pedal bicycle that has a helper motor or a non-pedal bicycle that:

  • Has a motor of less than 50 cc.
  • Has an automatic transmission.
  • Can't exceed 30 mph.
Mopeds must be registered.

Scooters

A scooter doesn't need to be registered.

Other Motorcycle Registration Matters

Need to know more information regarding the registration of motorcycles or other bikes? Or maybe have a question about a vehicle registration? Contact the MA RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926.

By the way, don't go motorcycle riding without a current registration, even if your motorcycle registration expired yesterday.
