The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) most recent “Hot Wheels” stolen vehicles report is from 2008.  Auto thefts were highest in 2008 for these top ten cars:

  1. Honda Accord (1996)
  2. Chevrolet Conventional Cab 4x2 (1989)
  3. Ford F150 Pickup (1998)
  4. Chevrolet Caprice (1991)
  5. Oldsmobile Cutlass (1986)
  6. Toyota Camry (1995)
  7. Ford Taurus (1997)
  8. Ford Explorer (1994)
  9. Dodge Ram Pickup (1998)
  10. Chevrolet Impala (2004)

This is a national list of the most stolen vehicles; it varies by state. You can view the list by state, too. Contrary to common sense, new vehicles are not the most widely stolen cars. Instead, thieves mostly prefer cars from the 1990s. The NICB does not provide reasoning behind the thievery, just the facts.

There are a few simple tips to help prevent auto theft. Remember to always lock your car even when you're inside, keep valuables out of sight, park in well-lit areas, and consider buying a car-tracking device as well as an auto alarm.

If your car does get stolen, know how to report a stolen car. Call your local police department's non-emergency number (unless someone's life is threatened) and report the theft.
