Obtaining Massachusetts Motorcycle License Plates

You get your basic motorcycle license plates though a MA RMV full-service office at the time of registration. You can order vanity plates by completing the proper application form and turning it into the office, or by calling (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926.

The basic motorcycle registration costs $20. Vanity plates carry an additional annual $50 fee. Some specialized plates are available for motorcycles, too, with varying fees. Check out the RMV site or visit a RMV office for details.

Motorcycle Registration

To refresh your memory of the vehicle registration process (or, in case you've never registered a vehicle), here are the steps to register your motorcycle and get your license plate if you bought your bike from a Massachusetts dealer.

  1. Obtain a completed Application for Registration and Title (Form RMV-1) from the dealer.
  2. Bring the Form RMV-1 to an insurance agent.
  3. Purchase a motorcycle insurance policy.
  4. Have your agent stamp and sign the form.
  5. Include any applicable lien information on the Form RMV-1.
  6. Sign and date the Form RMV-1.
  7. Find your motorcycle Certificate of Origin document.
  8. Bring that certificate and the RMV-1 form to a RMV office.
  9. Pay the sales tax and registration fee.
Your vehicle must pass an inspection within seven days of receiving your registration in order to keep the registration active.

Remember, you shouldn't try motorcycle riding with an expired license plate, as you could be stopped by law enforcement and be forced to pay a fine.
