Is motorcycle registration the same as vehicle registration for a car?
Registering Motorcycles, Mopeds, and Scooters Across the States
Motorcycle registration requirements vary with each state, but in most instances you'll find that motorcycle registration is no different than car registration. You must provide all of the basic documents:- Proof of identity (exact documents vary by state).
- Proof of ownership (usually this means the title or a Manufacturer Certificate of Origin).
- Proof of insurance.
- Payment of all applicable fees.
Of course, depending on your ride, you might also need to think about the exact definitions of – and registration requirements for – bikes other than motorcycles, such as scooters and mopeds. Some states put mopeds in the same category as motorcycles, for the most part, and require owners to register them, and some states don’t allow drivers to operate scooters anywhere but private property and therefore don’t require them to be registered.
For the exact vehicle registration requirements in your state, contact your local DMV. Most DMV websites will post your state's registration requirements in step-by-step detail, including fee descriptions and downloadable forms.
