How to Avoid Buying A Lemon
Steps to Help You Avoid Purchasing a Lemon
Lets be clear: There isn't one single step - or even a collection of steps - you can take that will guarantee you won't be stuck with a lemon car. But, there are some precautions you can take that will sharply reduce the odds of having to deal with a lemon. And, as a consumer, that's the best you can do.
The following four actions can keep those lemons away from you. But, not every measure may be applicable to your situation.
1. Do Your Homework
Consult an independent, unbiased source of information, such as Consumer Reports, buying your car. Check the repair history and general comments about the model you're interested in getting. Cars with long histories of repair problems only add to your chances of being burdened with a lemon.
2. Insist on a Test Drive
Going on a test drive - or maybe more than one - can give you some clues about the vehicle's condition. If it's handling seems be off, if it makes odd noises, if the brakes don't seem firm, if it has an unusual odor, or you just have a general sense that something is not right, it may be due to the car having mechanical issues that you should avoid.
3. Hire a Mechanic
A qualified, trusted auto repair mechanic can help confirm those issues you noticed in your test drive, and may uncover hidden issues. The small price for the inspections can pay off in a big way if it stops you from buying a lemon.
4. Get a Vehicle History Report (VHR)
These research reports offer all sorts of information about a vehicle's history, including title and repair histories, and will give you clues about the likelihood the car will be a lemon. A VHR is another minor expense that can save you from a lot of frustration and wasted time down the road.
Lemon Laws
So, what happens if you're cautious, take all these steps, and still end up with a lemon car?Check to see what sort of protection your state's Lemon Law offers. Be aware, though, some state Lemon Laws only cover new cars, not used cars.
If your car does fall under the law, consider hiring a Lemon Law attorney. Why? Because a Lemon Law lawyer understands every aspect of these complex rules and procedures, can help ensure your rights are protected, and can enhance the odds you'll receive compensation for all your car troubles.
