Completing Vessel Registration in California

Vessel registration must be completed within 120 days of when boats are brought into the state. The process is a bit simpler than vehicle registration; you may either register in person at a CA DMV office or mail in your application and fees to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 942869
Sacramento, CA 94269-0001

Required Paperwork

Whether you choose to complete your boat registration in person or by mail, you must:

  • Fill out the Application for Vessel Certificate of Number (BOAT 101).
  • Provide proof of ownership. A bill of sale or invoice will do, or a bond for the value if the boat is worth more than $2,000.

Fees

  • Even-numbered year, resident: $29
  • Odd-numbered year, resident: $49
  • Even-numbered year, non resident: $57
  • Odd-numbered year, non-resident: $77
Boat registrations are renewed every two years during odd-numbered years. Renewals are $20.

Fees to register a watercraft may change. Be aware that if your boat was bought in another state within the last year, you’ll need to pay use tax fees. Go into a DMV office to get use tax fees calculated.

Receiving Your Certificate of Number

The DMV will give you a Certificate of Number, which is a boat registration certificate, plus registration stickers. The stickers must be placed on the boat three inches aft on each side of the boat, next to the CF number.
