Boater Safety in California

Taking a boaters safety course is not required in California (neither is a boaters license) but it is highly recommended.

Taking a boating safety course will:

  • Teach you all the laws and safety requirements for operating boats and other watercraft.
  • Possibly score you a discount on boat insurance.
Boat safety courses are available through a downloadable course called the California Boater Safety Course, available on the DMV-sister CalBoating website. Once you study the material, you can take a test and receive a certificate of completion.

Boaters safety courses are also available at various aquatic centers, through the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and through the United State Power Squadrons. The government-sponsored classes only charge for materials, while private classes charge fees. A boat license is not required.
