Boater Safety Course Requirements in Texas

In Texas, boater education is required for people born after September 1, 1984 and people convicted of certain violations of the Water Safety Act.

Even if you're not legally required to complete a boating safety course for a boat license, however, obtaining this sort of training is a smart move. While operating boats can be a fun recreational activity, it does carry the risk of death or serious injury if you don't understand what boat safety precautions must be followed.

The Texas Boater Education Program offers course that are taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron, and trained volunteers. Classes cover topics such as:

  • Boater safety.
  • Water safety.
  • Handling accidents.
  • Coping with emergency situations.
  • Handling poor weather conditions.
  • Water sports.
  • Navigation rules.
  • Legal requirements for operating a boat in TX.
Fees for boater education classes start at $13, with additional charges for home study courses or courses which provide extra hands-on training.

When you complete the boater education class, you will be given a certification card. You should keep the certification card with you whenever you are operating your watercraft. It is considered your boaters license.

Insurance Discounts

Many insurance companies will provide discounts to people who successfully complete an approved boater safety course.

If you are interested in obtaining boaters safety education, ask your insurance agent what discounts are available and if the course you are considering will meet their requirements.
