Texas Boat License Requirements

In Texas, you must be at least 13 years of age to get a boaters license.

Completion of a boater safety class is required to operate a boat if you were born after September 1, 1984. Boat safety classes are taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron, and trained volunteers at locations across the state, with online and home-study boating safety course options available upon request.

When you complete your boat safety course, you will be issued a boater certification card. This card is considered your boaters license and should be carried with you whenever you operate a watercraft. You will also need to have a photo ID in your possession at all times.

Operating While Intoxicated

Although TX open container laws do not apply to boating, you are not allowed to operate a boat while intoxicated.

If you are arrested for operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol, you will have your drivers license automatically suspended for 180 days on the first offense. The penalty is the same if you refuse to provide a breath or blood sample upon the request of a law enforcement officer.
