Florida Boating Safety Course Requirements

You will have to take a boating safety course if you were born on or after January 1, 1988, and operate a vessel or boat powered by at least 10 horsepower.

Boating Safety Course Exceptions

Some exceptions to the FL boat safety rule apply, including:

  • An individual using boats only on a private lake or pond.
  • A person licensed by the U. S. Coast Guard as a master of the vessel.
  • An individual operating the boat who is accompanied by someone at least 18 years old (with a valid Boating Safety Education Identification Card) and who is responsible for the safe operation of the boat.

Locating a Boating Safety Course

You can meet your Florida requirements and get your identification card for boater safety (issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) by successfully completing an approved boater safety course. This course is available through the state of through third-party providers.

See the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission site for details regarding the boaters safety class requirements, and where to find the boater safety course.

Your ID card acts as a boat license; be sure to have your boaters license with you whenever you're operating a watercraft that requires a "licensed" operator.
