No Boat License in Florida

Well, to start, Florida doesn't have a boaters license.

Instead, it has a Boating Safety Education Identification Card. You qualify for this card after completing a state-approved boat safety course. These courses are available through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or through third-party providers. See the Florida gaming site for details.

Who Needs a Boater Safety Card?

You must take a boat safety class if you were born on or after January 1, 1988, and operate a watercraft powered by at least 10 horsepower.

However, there are some exceptions, including:

  • A person who uses the boat only on a private lake or pond
  • A person licensed by the U. S. Coast Guard as a master of the vessel
  • A person who operates the boat with someone is at least 18 years old (who has a valid Boating Safety Education Identification Card) and is responsible for the safe operation of the boat

Important Note on Boater Safety Cards

Keep your FL boater ID, along with photo identification, with you whenever you're operating a boat that requires a boating safety course ID.
