Georgia Boaters Safety and Boat License Requirements

Only potential boat operators younger than 16 years old must enroll in a boating safety course approved by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR).

A Georgia Boater Education Card will serve as your boaters license.  This card must be carried with you while operating any boats or personal watercraft (PWC). Failure to have the boat safety card could result in heavy fines.

To make for easy compliance the DNR gives you three course options: classroom, home study, and online.

Boater Safety Classroom Course

Classroom courses are taught by the DNR throughout the state. For class availability call (770) 761-3061.

The DNR also recognizes courses taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Golden Isles Sail and Power Squadron.

Boater Safety Home Study Course

Before enrolling, be sure the boater safety course is recognized by the DNR. Any Boater Education Card issued by a non-sanctioned program will not accepted.

Home study classes are taught via DVD or VHS. In most instances you'll be given a PIN to take the final test online. Expect to pay a course fee somewhere in the range of $25 to $40.

Boater Safety Online Course

The DNR approves of six online courses. Visit the DNR website for a list. Some of these courses will waive your registration fee if you fail.
