Georgia Boat License Requirements

For clarity’s sake, a Georgia boaters license is known as a Boater Education Card. This can only be obtained by completing a boating safety course (online, home study, or classroom) approved by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

For help on finding a boat safety course, visit the DNR website.

Georgia boaters license requirements depend on age.

12- and 13-Year-Old Boat Operators

You can only operate a Class A boat propelled by a motor of 30 or fewer horsepower, or a personal watercraft (PWC) if:

  • You hold a DNR-approved Boater Education Card from a boat safety class.
  • You are either accompanied or supervised by a "competent adult."
NOTE: Georgia defines a competent adult as anyone 18 or older with proper identification and who is not under the influence of booze or drugs.

14-and 15-Year-Old Boat Operators

You can legally operate any class of boat if:

  • You hold a DNR-approved Boater Education Card from a boater safety course.
  • You are either accompanied or supervised by a competent adult.

Boat Operators 16 Years Old and Older

No GA boaters license is required. You can operate any type of boat provided you carry proper identification, such as a drivers license or any type of photo ID showing your name and birth date.
