New York Vessel Registration Fees

If you own a motor-propelled watercraft you will need boat registration. This requires filing proper documents and paying one of the following registration fees based on the length of your boat:

  • Fewer than 16 feet: $26.25 ($22.50 registration fee and $3.75 surcharge fee)
  • 16 feet to fewer than 26 feet: $57.50 ($45 registration fee and $12.50 surcharge fee)
  • 26 feet or longer: $93.75  ($75 registration fee and $18.75 surcharge fee)
NOTE: Registration renewal fees are the same as the original registration fees.

The NY DMV handles all boat registrations. A registration is valid for three years, and current registration decals must be affixed in line with the bow's hull identification numbers.

Just as it does for cars and vehicle registration, the NY DMV sends renewal notices for boats. You must renew accordingly or otherwise risk getting fined for operating a vessel without a valid boat registration.
