Am I required to take a NY boating safety course? New York
NY Boaters Safety Requirements
In New York you must complete a boating safety course if:- You skipper a personal watercraft and are at least 14 years old.
- You're at least 10 years old and younger than 18 and want to skipper a motorboat (not the same as a personal watercraft).
- You are younger than 10 years old and want to operate a motor-propelled boat while under the onboard supervision of someone who is 18 or older.
Locating a Boat Safety Course
Boater safety courses are offered throughout the state year round. To qualify for a boater safety course certificate (or what some call a boat license) you must enroll in a safety course certified by the New York Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. You can find course availability on the agency’s website. The course, which requires a minimum of eight hours of classroom instruction, teaches the basic fundamentals of the safe operation of boats. Depending on the instructor there may or may not be a course fee.
If you cannot attend one of these classes, the state will recognize a course completion certificate from any boater safety course taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadron. For information on these courses and the boaters license each will provide call (800) 336-2628.
