The NY Boaters License Equivalent

Instead of a boat license, New York requires a boating safety course certificate. This can be obtained by attending a state-approved boater safety course.

You must hold a boat safety course completion certificate if:

  • You want to operate a motorboat (excluding personal watercraft) and are at least 10 years old and younger than 18. If you're 18 or older you do not need a boating safety course completion certificate.
  • You want to operate a personal watercraft (PWC) and are at least 14 years old. All PWC operators must complete the safety course.
For your boater safety certificate to be honored you must enroll in a course recognized by the state.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation sponsors year round courses throughout New York and you can search class availability, by county, on the agency’s website. These eight-hours courses are all classroom-based. Depending on the instructor you may or may not be charged a fee.

In addition, the state also recognizes boater safety classes taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadrons. For information on these courses call (800) 336-2628.

Remember, if you’re caught without a required boat safety certificate you can be fined up to $100 and tossed in jail for seven days.
