How do I apply for a boaters license in New York? New York
Obtaining a NY Boater Safety Certificate
Instead of a boat license New York requires a boat safety certificate. This is required for all personal watercraft (PWC) operators (you must be at least 14 to navigate a PWC) and for motorboat operators who are at least 10 years old but younger than 18.Finding a Boating Safety Course Near You
To obtain a boat safety certificate you need to enroll in a boat safety course that's sanctioned by the state. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation sponsors courses throughout New York on a year round basis. The course features eight hours of classroom training, teaching the fundamentals of boat safety. Topics covered include:
- Boat ramp guidelines
- Hull identification numbers
- Navigation lights
- Hypothermia dangers
- Boating under the influence (BUI)
- Signaling devices
- Pollution regulations
The state also recognizes boat safety courses taught by the U.S. Power Squadron and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. It DOES NOT, however, sanction online courses.
After completing the course you'll be issued two sheets: a white temporary safety course certificate and a yellow copy. Send the yellow copy along with a $10 processing fee to the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. If you're younger than 18, your course instructor will submit the yellow copy for you. It will take at least 60 days for your permanent certificate to arrive in the mail. Until then hang on to your temporary course certificate – it will act as your boaters license until then.
