No Renewal for the NY Boat License Equivalent

There is no New York boaters license in the literal sense.

Instead, all personal watercraft (PWC) operators (you must be at least 14) and skippers of motorboats who are at least 10 years old and younger than 18 must carry a boat safety course completion certificate, and once you receive this certificate you do not have to worry about a renew license method. There is no expiration date, even if you received it in 1996 when you 14 years old while operating an aluminum 15-foot dinghy on Lake George. As long as you hold a boater safety course certificate you are a legal.

Obtaining a Boat Safety Certificate

To obtain a boating safety course certificate you must enroll in course sanctioned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. If you enroll in a course not recognized by the state your boating safety certificate will not be honored. This means you'll be operating a motorboat or PWC illegally, putting you at risk of being fined and serving jail time.

The state does accept boating safety course certificates issued by the U.S. Power Squadron and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
