Obtaining a Duplicate Boaters License in NY

Really, New York does not issue a boat license. It does, however, require holding a boating safety course certificate if you're a personal watercraft (PWC) operator (must be at least 14), or if you're a motorboat driver who is at least 10 years old and younger than 18.

So it’s not so much that you have a lost license as it is you have a lost boater safety certificate.

If your boater safety certificate, goes missing here's how to apply for a duplicate license:

  1. Complete an Application for a Replacement NY Safe Boating Certificate. This can be downloaded from the website for the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
  2. Write a check or money order payable to "NYS Parks" for $10. If you're 18 there is no charge.
  3. Send everything to:
NYS Parks, Marine Services Unit
Agency Building #1, ESP
Albany, NY 12238

If you're younger than 18 you also have the option of faxing the application to (518) 408-1030.

Your new boat safety certificate should arrive in the mail in three to four weeks. Keep in mind that temporary boater safety certificates cannot be replaced.

Locating a Boat Safety Course

To obtain a boating safety course certificate you must complete a course sanctioned by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The department will not honor a course certificate taught by a class not recognized by state.

You can find available courses when visit the agency’s website.
