New Jersey Boat License Requirements

Only those who are 16 years or older and operate personal watercraft and motorboats on non-tidal waters (such as lakes, creeks, rivers) must carry a New Jersey boaters license (sometimes referred to as a non-tidal boat operator license). Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $500 and up to 60 days in jail.

To obtain a license you must first complete a boating safety course approved by the New Jersey State Police (NJSP). Any boater safety certificate from a non-sanctioned course will not be recognized. To comply you must enroll in a boat safety course taught by one of the three following sponsors:

  • New Jersey Safety Boating Classes
  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
  • U.S. Power Squadrons
Classroom courses feature eight hours of classroom training, addressing boat safety basics like navigating, docking, and the importance of safety vests. Upon successfully completing the course you'll receive a boater safety certificate.

Applying for a Boat License

Visit any MVC office and present:

  • Your boater safety course completion certificate.
  • Enough identification to pass the state's 6 Point ID Verification Program.
  • Parental consent if you’re younger than 17.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express) to pay the $18 boat license fee.
A NJ boaters license is valid for four years.
