Registering Your Watercraft in Illinois

Unlike vehicle registration, which is handled by the Secretary of State (SOS) offices, boat registration is handled through the IL Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

You can apply for registration by mail or in person at the DNR by submitting:

  • Proof of ownership.
  • A completed registration/title application. This can be downloaded from the DNR website.
  • Payment for registration fee.
A boat registration is valid for three years.
