Illinois Boat License Requirements

Only boaters who are 12 years old but younger than 18 must carry a boaters license in order to skipper a motorized boat or a personal watercraft (such as a Jet Ski). All other boaters are exempt from this mandate.

An Illinois boaters license also goes by the name of boater education card. To obtain this card you must complete a boating safety course that's approved by the IL Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This is very important. Any boater education card issued by a non-sanctioned course will not be recognized, requiring re-enrolling in an approved program.

Many sponsors (like the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Power Squadron, park districts, and schools) teach these boat safety classes throughout the state, year round. To find an approved Illinois Boating Education Course in your area, visit the DNR website for course availability.

These courses feature eight hours of classroom training. All boater safety topics are covered including collisions, running aground, distress signals, the importance of life jackets, registration requirements, controlling a personal watercraft, navigating at night, and much more.

Before enrolling in a boat safety course, check with the DNR for approval confirmation. This includes online programs as well.

At the end of the program, you'll be issued a test. Pass and you'll receive an Illinois boaters license.
