Renewing Your PA Identification Card

The Pennsylvania (PA) Bureau of Driver Licensing typically mails out identification (ID) card renewal forms six months before the ID cards are due to expire.  PA ID cards must be renewed every four years unless you move out of PA or decide not to keep the card any longer.

If you do not receive your renewal form four or fewer weeks before your ID card is due to expire, you can process your ID renewal online. You can also visit your nearest Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) service center to renew your state ID card in person.

If you are a teen or minor who is younger than 18 years of age, you must bring your parent or guardian with you to the PennDOT service or photo center.

In-Person Renewal

To renew ID cards at the nearest PennDOT service or photo center:

  1. Complete Form DL-54B.
  2. Check box Number Two at the top of the form to indicate that you are renewing your state ID.
  3. Type the ID number off of your current photo ID card in the applicable space on the form. The number is in the upper right hand corner of the ID card.
  4. Fill in your first and last name, date of birth, and contact information, including your street mailing address, telephone number, and email address (if you have one).
  5. Indicate whether or not you want to be an organ donor; also provide your eye color.
  6. Present proof of identity (i.e. Social Security card, birth certificate, United States passport)
  7. Sign the form and pay the applicable ID renewal fee. Make your check out to “PennDOT.”
  8. Submit your expired ID card to the PennDOT agent.
Teens and minors younger than 18 years of age are required to also have their parents or guardians sign the form.

The PennDOT agent who processes your renewal paperwork will direct you to an area where you will take your new photo. Agents will generally let you review your first photo before they laminate the ID card. If you do not like the first photo, the agent will immediately take another photo of you.

Sign your card using PennDOT’s electronic signature machine and you are finished.

Online Renewal

To process your ID renewal online:

  1. Log onto the PennDOT Online Driver and Vehicle Services website.
  2. Type the number from your current photo ID card in the space provided at the online site.
  3. Provide your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
  4. Review the data shown in the online system for your ID card. If your address, telephone number, or name has changed since the ID card was issued, fill in the updated information in the applicable sections on the screen
  5. Visit an authorized PennDOT service or photo center to have your photo taken.
  6. Sign the card at the authorized service or photo center and you are finished.
