Get a MA ID

First of all, let's see if you qualify. To get a state ID, you must be at least 16 years old, without a drivers license from any state, and a Massachusetts resident.

If you meet those restrictions, you can apply for your identification card in one of the following two ways, according to your age.

Younger than 18

  1. Go to a full-service MA RMV office.
  2. Bring one original document proving date of birth.
  3. Supply your Social Security number or a denial notice with a valid foreign passport, visa, and I-94 Form.
  4. Complete an ID application form with parental consent.
  5. Pay the $25 fee
You'll receive a temporary, 30-day ID card to use while your official card arrives in the mail.

18 or Older

  1. Go to a full-service MA RMV office.
  2. Bring one original document each proving date of birth, signature, and MA residency.
  3. Supply your Social Security number or a denial notice with a valid foreign passport, visa, and I-94 Form.
  4. Complete an ID application form.
  5. Pay the $25 fee.
You'll receive a temporary, 30-day ID card to use while your official card arrives in the mail.

Additional Identification Card Information

These ID cards are great for teens or younger adults who often need to provide some sort of photo identification but don't have a teen or full drivers license. State ID cards are valid for five years, and can be renewed or replaced for $25.
