MA Boat Registration Process

Just follow these steps to apply for a Massachusetts vessel registration.

  1. Go to a regional registration office.
  2. Bring the bill of sale, proof of sales tax payment, and Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (new boats only).
  3. Bring the title (only for boats 14 feet or longer).
  4. Bring a pencil tracing of  the Hull ID number or serial number.
  5. Complete and sign the boat registration application.
  6. Pay the watercraft registration fees.

MA Boat Registration Notes

  • Boats without a Hull ID number may need to pass an inspection prior to registration.
  • Registrations are valid for two years and must be renewed (just like with a vehicle registration).
  • Sales tax can be paid online through the Department of Revenue site.
  • A registration can substitute for a title if registering an out-of-state boat (that's at least 14 feet long) bought from a private owner.
  • Fees may be paid by cash, check, or money order.
  • Fees vary depending on the length of the vessel.
