Boater Safety Requirements in Massachusetts

The answer depends on your age.

18 and Older

You don't need to take a boating safety course in order to operate watercraft on Massachusetts waterways. However, it's a good idea to complete some type of boater safety course, just for your own well-being as those onboard with you.

16-17 Years Old

If you want to operate a jet ski, wave runner, or other type of personal watercraft, you must complete an approved boater safety course.

12-15 Years Old

To operate a motorboat by yourself, you'll need to finish a MA-approved boat safety course.

More MA Boating Safety Course Information

Boat Massachusetts courses are offered at no cost. The course is typically broken into two days, averaging between five and six hours each day. You can register by calling (508) 759-0002 or (508) 759-3393. You must be at least 12 years old to participate.

When you complete the course, you'll be granted a boaters safety certificate, not a boat license or boaters license. Be sure to have the certificate with you when operating a boat.

Always exercise caution when operating boats, no matter what type they may be.
