No Boat License in Massachusetts

Let's back up a bit.

Massachusetts doesn't officially have a boaters license. Instead, the state grants a safety certificate once you've completed an approved boating safety course.

Now, back to the question.

You don't need to obtain a safety certificate if you're at least 18 years old (although doing so is encouraged). However, you must have a MA boat safety certificate if any of the following applies:

  • You’re 16-17 years old: If you're in this category and wish to operate a jet ski, wave runner, or other type of personal watercraft, you must complete a boat safety course.
  • You’re 12-15 years old: If you're in this category and desire to operate a motorboat by yourself, you must complete a boat safety course.

Getting Your Boater Safety Certificate

You can obtain your required safety certificate by completing a Boat Massachusetts course. These classes are free, and usually take 10-12 hours covering a two-day period. Contact (508) 759-0002 or (508) 759-3393 to register and hear the class schedules and locations. You'll need to be at least 12 years old to take the boat safety course.

Those who successfully complete the class will be given a boater safety certificate, which should be with you when operating a watercraft.
