California Title Transfer for a Car Donation

A car donation must still be reported to the DMV so you can release your liability, and the CA DMV won’t think you still own the used car. This means the titles of cars being donated must be transferred just like in any other change-of-ownership transaction.

To complete the title transfer when you donate a car:

  1. Sign the car title in the space marked “Seller.”
  2. The charity must sign in the space marked “Buyer.”
  3. Notify the DMV that you no longer own the car by completing the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability online or on paper at a DMV office.
Once you’ve done this, the vehicle donation is complete. Used cars can keep their old license plates on them.

Donate Car, Get a Tax Break

The main reason many people like to use car donations is for a tax credit. You may:

  • Take up to $500 or the value of the vehicle.
  • Take the actual sale price of the car after the charity sells it. This is dependent on the charity selling it and you’ll have to wait for a receipt.
Consult a tax accountant if you have any questions for this IRS matter.
