California Statutes

California’s vehicle code, or Code of Regulations, covers all traffic laws. This is the legal material the CA Driver’s Manual is based on.

Many people who get a speeding ticket or other kind of traffic ticket use the statutes to look up the vehicle codes, to see whether the ticket was justified. If your ticket was not justified according to the vehicle code, then you may contest your ticket in court. This is a way to get your traffic ticket dismissed.

Searching the Vehicle Codes

Each statute is available online on the DMV's website. Codes are searchable alphabetically by subject, or by using an Appendix. Finding what you need has become easier using the technology provided by the DMV.
