California Tint Laws
Regarding tint law, the California Highway Patrol says that:- Aftermarket tinted windows may not include the windshield and the front and passenger’s side windows. Auto manufacturers already comply with this law when they apply auto tinting.
- There must be rearview mirrors on both sides of a car that has a car tint on the back.
- If you have a clear UV protective film on the car windows, you must remove it when it begins bubbling.
Cars from Other States
If you’re from another state, you must comply with California’s window tint law.
At vehicle registration the DMV will not conduct an inspection on your windows as they do in some other states unless you’re bringing the car in from a different state. However, know that you can be cited for illegally tinted windows at any time by the CHP or local law enforcement.

The best thing to do is to make sure that your window tints are legal according to the state law that you are in. In some cities, police are especially notorious for giving motorists with tinted windows a hard time. If you are having your windows tinted, ensure that you are within the safety net.
