Texas Safety Laws and Window Tinting Conditions

People choose to apply window tint to their vehicles for many different reasons; however, it's important to make sure you obey all applicable laws before investing in auto tinting services for your car or truck.

Texas safety laws state that it is a misdemeanor to drive a vehicle with any object or material attached to the windshield, rear, or side windows that obstructs or reduces the driver’s visibility. It is also a misdemeanor for any person to apply any material that changes the color or reduces the light transmission of a vehicle window.

The tint law applies to the windshield, rear window, and the side windows to the right and left of the driver. Side windows to the rear of the driver are exempt from regulation under tint laws.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) checks compliance with tint laws during vehicle registration and inspection.

In order for auto tinting sunscreening devices to be legal, there are certain conditions that must be met:

  • Sunscreening devices applied to the windshield can't be blue, red, or amber in color.
  • On the windshield, sunscreening devices must be applied above the AS-1 line. If the vehicle does not have an AS-1 line, the car tint must end five inches below the top of the windshield.
  • When measured in combination with the original glass, the tinting must have a light transmittance value of 25% or more and a luminance reflectance value of 25% or less.

Window Tint Medical Exemptions

Persons with certain medical conditions may require darker tinted windows as a safety precaution. Exemptions to the Texas window tinting laws can be granted on a case-by-case basis.

If you believe you should be exempt from the window tinting law, you will need to have your physician submit a signed request to the Department of Public Safety Vehicle Services Bureau. In the event your exemption is granted, you will be given an official letter from the TX DPS that should be carried in your vehicle at all times.
