Keep Your Florida License Plates

Always remember the following when it comes to Florida license plates: The license plate stays with you. It doesn't matter if you donate a car, sell a used car to a private buyer or a dealer, or give a car to your neighbor, friend, or relative.

But, don't just throw those plates away. You can transfer them to another vehicle you own. If not, you must surrender the plates and request they be cancelled by dropping them off at a county tax collector's office, or by mailing them (along with a note requesting cancellation) to:

Division of Motor Vehicles
Neil Kirkman Building
Mail Stop 63

Donate Car Process

A vehicle donation is a wonderful gesture. However, make sure you follow the proper title transfer process for car donations by consulting the DHSMV site. And, before donating used cars to charities, review both the charity and applicable car donation tax laws. Otherwise, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise.
