Car Donations and the FL DHSMV

You're not required to tell the DHSMV if you choose to donate a car.

But, you will need to make a decision about the license plates, and notify the agency concerning your intentions. You can either transfer the plates to another vehicle you own, or you must give the license plates to the DHSMV. If you decide to do the latter, you can drop off your used car plates at a DHSMV office, or send them - along with a note requesting cancellation - to:

Division of Motor Vehicles
Neil Kirkman Building
Mail Stop 63
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0500

Although you're not required to do so, you should file a used car notice of sale form with the DHSMV (the form is available on the state site). Taking this step alerts the DHSMV about the car donation, and releases previous owners of the used cars of any liability should the new owners fail to properly handle the titles and registrations.

Additional Donate Car Information

Of course, you must complete a title transfer and give the car title to the new owner. For additional information regarding car donations in Florida, contact the DHSMV at (850) 617-2000.

Be sure to investigate the charity and see if it's legitimate before donating the car. Also, check into the tax rules concerning vehicle donations as these can be complex. Doing so will help you maximize the financial advantages of a car donation, even if that's not your primary reason for your act of kindness.
