What do I do with my license plates if I donate a car in GA? Georgia
Transferring License Plates after Car Donations
After you donate a car, and perhaps after you purchase a new vehicle, you may find yourself wondering what you should do with your license plates. Luckily, Georgia allows most drivers to transfer their plates after car donations of used cars. You can have 30 days to transfer your valid Georgia license plate from a used car you no longer own to your newly purchased vehicle by visiting your county tax commissioner's office and paying a $5 license plate transfer fee. There is also an $18 fee if you require a title transfer at the same time as the vehicle donation license plate transfer.
After you complete the donate car process, in order to be eligible for a license plate transfer both vehicles (the used car you donated and the new car you’ll be driving thereafter) must fall under the same plate price and plate type. For example, you would not be able to transfer a car license plate to a trailer because these are different types of vehicles with different license plate fees.
If you are going to transfer your license plate during your registration renewal period, you will need to follow all the steps for license plate renewal. This means that ad valorem taxes may be due, depending upon your county of residence.
For answers to questions regarding license plate transfers, please call the IRP Unit of the GA Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) at (404) 657-4186.
