Car Donations and Notifying the MVD

In Georgia, the new owner of a vehicle is responsible for going to the county tax commissioner’s office to complete the title transfer and registration process.

When you donate a car, this means a representative from the organization accepting your vehicle donation must complete the appropriate paperwork. However, in case there are errors during the donate car process, you will want to keep detailed records of the transaction for your own files. You will also need this information if you are planning to use the value of your car donation as a deduction on your federal and state income taxes.

Keeping a copy of the Bill of Sale used during the vehicle donation is a good idea because this document should contain the following information relevant to transferring titles:

  • Name and address of the seller/transferor.
  • Date of car title transfer.
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN), make, model, year, series number, and body type.
  • Name and address of vehicle recipient.
  • Vehicle odometer reading at time of transfer.
  • Signature of transferor.
  • Signature of reprehensive from organization accepting the vehicle donation.

And the License Plates for Donated Used Cars?

When you donate a car, the GA Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) states that you should remove the license plates from the used car after giving the new owner the car title. In most cases, you can pay a small fee to have the plates transferred to your replacement vehicle.

You have 30 days after the change in vehicle ownership to complete the license plate transfer.
