Georgia Tint Law

Window tint is measured in Visible Light Transmission (VTL) percentage. Georgia tint laws referencing VTL refer to the percentage of light emitted through film and glass into motor vehicle.

GA safety laws regarding window tinting are as follows:

  • Windshields can be tinted with non-reflective tints on the top six inches of window glass.
  • Front side windows, back side windows, and rear windows must exceed 32% VTL.
  • Tinted windows cannot be tinted in the color red.
  • The tinting of front side windows and back side windows cannot exceed 20% reflective power.
  • All windows must be tinted in certified film.
  • Vehicles with auto tinting must carry a sticker on the vehicle’s windshield signifying a legal degree of tinting.

Penalties for Illegal Tinting

Vehicles with an illegal degree of car tint are likely to fail a vehicle registration inspection. Driving an illegally tinted car could result in a traffic ticket and prosecution in a court of law.

Exemptions to the Tint Law

As of May 2010, the only exemption to GA tint law is for passengers and drivers requiring a special tint for medical purposes.
