Exemptions to GA Auto Tinting Law

As of May 2010, the only exemption to Georgia’s tint law pertains to passengers and drivers requiring a special degree of window tinting for medical purposes. In order to receive a medical exemption, you must submit the Application For Exemption To The Window Tint Law to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
 
The form requires you to fill out the following information:

  • First, last, and middle name.
  • Date of birth.
  • Personal mailing address.
  • GA drivers license number.
  • Name of vehicle owner if different from the applicant.
  • Vehicle make, model, license plate number, and ID number.
  • Completed and signed attestation by a medical physician stating the reason for medical exemption.
  • Applicant signature.Signature of a parent or legal guardian if the applicant is younger than 18 years of age.

GA Tint Laws

Safety laws pertaining to tinted windows include the following:

  • Windshields can be tinted with non-reflective film on the upper six inches of window glass.
  • Tinted windows cannot be more than 20% reflective.
  • Tinted windows must emit more than 32% visible light through film and glass into the motor vehicle.
  • Tinted vehicles must carry a sticker on the windshield signifying a legal degree of tint.
  • Windows must be tinted with certified film from the manufacturer.

Penalties for Tint Law Noncompliance

Failure to comply with auto tinting laws could result in a traffic ticket and prosecution in a court of law. Vehicles tinted with noncertified film, in addition to vehicles with an illegal degree of tinting, are likely to fail Georgia’s vehicle registration inspection.
