Transfer or Return Your NY License Plates 

Regardless if you're selling your used car or donating it, you must remove the license plates during any type of title transfer (change of ownership). After removing the plates you then have the option of transferring them to a different vehicle owned by you.  Or, if not, you must surrender the plates to the DMV.

If you opt to turn in the plates, be sure to do this before canceling your auto insurance. If you cancel your insurance before canceling your vehicle registration, the DMV will interpret this as a lapse in insurance coverage, leading to the possible suspension of your registration and drivers license.

Remove the license plate frames and fasteners. The DMV will not accept a plate or plates with frame and/or fasteners attached. You can either surrender the plates in person at your local DMV office, or submit by mail. If you opt by mail, send the plates, along with your mailing address, to:

Upon receiving, the New York DMV will mail you an FS-6T receipt. You'll need this receipt to apply, if eligible, for a registration refund.

  • Will your vehicle donation earn you a tax deduction?
  • Will the charity provide free pick-up service as part of the donate car process?
  • Will the money generated by your car donation be used locally?
After deciding on a charity you'll need to provide:

  • The vehicle's title. Be sure to sign and complete the odometer and damage control statements.
  • A completed Statement of Transaction for Sales Tax (Form DTF-802).
Your selected charity should notify you of the vehicle's deduction amount within 30 days of the title transfer date.
