Transferring NY Titles During Car Donations

The title transfer process for a vehicle donation is no different than that of transferring any other car title in New York. You're the used car seller and the charity of your choice is the used car buyer. The lone difference is that no money will be exchanged.

To donate a car you must follow these steps:

  1. Complete the odometer and damage disclosure statements on the back of the car title.
  2. Write the charity's name on the title as the buyer. It must be the charity's name and not the name of an individual. Otherwise you could be the victim of a scam and not receive tax donation benefits that come with donating used cars.
  3. Sign and date the title.
  4. Complete a Statement of Transaction for Sales Tax (Form DTF-802).
  5. Keep copies of all involved documents.
After completing the title and donate car paperwork, remove the vehicle's license plates. You then have the option of transferring the plates to another vehicle under your name, or, if not, surrendering them to the DMV. If you opt to turn in the plates, do not cancel the vehicle's insurance until after you surrender the plates.

Once the car donation is complete, your charity of choice must notify you within 30 days of the vehicle's deduction amount.
