Vehicle Donation and Notifying the DMV

In North Carolina, you do not have to submit a release of liability or any other notification to the NC DMV when you donate a car. Just sign over the title to the charity. In the “amount” box, write “donation.”

Finding a Charity for Car Donation

Many charities take used cars as car donations and may:

  • Auction the used car off to make money.
  • Sell it for scraps.
  • Use the car to help run the business.
Look up your favorite charity and ask about its donate car process. Be sure it’s a certified 501(c)(3) charity, which means it’s on file with the federal government.

Questions the Charity Might Ask You

The charity might ask you to:

  • Conduct a title transfer in person with a notary.
  • Disclose all damage the car has on the back of the car title.
  • Make sure you own any titles free and clear.
  • Provide the VIN, mileage, make, and year of the car over the phone.

Questions You Might Ask the Charity

  • Ask the charity what they plan to do with the car.
  • Ask if they will pick up the car for you.
If they will auction the car, you can deduct the amount they get for it. If they don’t auction it, you can deduct how much it’s worth, up to $500. It might be better to wait and see if the charity will get more for the car at auction, if it’s in good shape.

Read up on car donations and deductions on the IRS website, or ask a tax accountant.
