Titles and Car Donations in NC

To complete a North Carolina title transfer for a vehicle donation, you must own the car title. On the back:

  1. Write the charity’s name and address.
  2. Sign your name under where it asks for the seller.
  3. Write the date of car donation.
  4. Write down the mileage where it asks for the odometer reading.
  5. Get the form notarized.
  6. Note any damages.
Next, remove the license plates from the used car. You may use these on a different vehicle, or take them back to the NC DMV.

Searching for a Charity

Many national and local charities accept used cars. When you donate a car, the charity might sell it for junk, or auction it off to raise money.

Simply look up your favorite charity and ask about its donate car policy. If you can’t think of a charity, do a search for car donations and charities and a list will appear.

Once you choose a charity, ask if it will pick up the car for you. Also be sure to get a receipt. If you wait until after auction, you can deduct the sale amount. Otherwise, you must deduct only the car’s value, up to $500.
