North Carolina Vehicle Code

The code of regulations, or statutes, has all the laws pertaining to driving and traffic. The DMV uses the vehicle codes to write its test and handbook.

Here you’ll find out laws regarding everything that applies to cars and driving, such as what your responsibilities are when you sell your car.

Where to Find the Vehicle Code

The vehicle codes are in Chapter 20 of the larger NC General Statutes, online at the website for the General Assembly of North Carolina. They have a searchable database, so you can find information for a statute by keyword.

When to Use the Vehicle Code

If you get a traffic ticket or speeding ticket and you believe you should be cleared because you were cited in error, you should look up the law that applies to your ticket. Then you can see if you are correct. If you are, write down the information from the law and the statute number, and take it into court to try to get your ticket dismissed.
