North Carolina Tint Law Exemptions

Tinted windows that had tinting applied after the car was manufactured (aftermarket) are examined at DMV vehicle registration inspection.

Though usually window tinting can’t have less than a 32% light transmission when measured with a photometer during an inspection, North Carolina allows some exceptions to the window tint rule and safety laws. These vehicles may have darker auto tinting under tint laws:

  • Limos.
  • Tour vehicles.
  • For-hire passenger vehicles.
  • Ambulances.
  • Rear-windows of a vehicle that hauls property.
  • Law-enforcement vehicles.
  • Minivan and pickup trucks (the rear window).
Details about what defines these vehicles can be found in the general statutes, G.S. 20-4.01, around paragraph 27.

Medical Exemptions for Car Tint

In addition, people who are photosensitive (who can’t handle the light) may get exceptions to the safety laws. To get this permit, which is good for five years, they must:

  • Apply at the NC DMV using the Drivers Medical Evaluation Program, with the form completed by a doctor.
  • Display the permit sticker in the back window.
  • Always have the permit in the car.
