Transferring NJ Titles During Car Donations

You are the seller and the charity is the buyer. To complete the title transfer you, the seller, must sign over the car title. To do this you must add the following to the reverse side of the car title:

  • An odometer reading.
  • The charity's name and address.
  • Date of "sale."
  • Sale price. You'll need to contact the NJ MVC on what to write for price.
Before handing over the keys and completing the vehicle donation, be sure to remove the car's license plates. You then have the option of transferring them to another car under your name. If you don't transfer the plates you must surrender them to the MVC. You can do this in person or by mailing the plates to the following address:

Motor Vehicle Commission
Trenton Regional Service Center
P.O. Box 125
Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0125

Donate a Car in New Jersey

If you don't have a charity in mind, contact the Better Business Bureau in your area. It can provide you with a list of charities to choose from, and might even tell you which ones will accept a used car as a car donation.

When deciding, weigh some of the following factors:

  • Will you receive a tax deduction for your used car?
  • How will the money generated by your car donation be used?
  • Will the charity provide free pick-up service as part of its donate car process?
If you have any questions regarding how to handle the titles, registrations, or license plates of used cars that will become charity car donations, contact your local NJ MVC office.
