Are there any exemptions to the NJ child safety seat laws? New Jersey
One Exception to NJ Child Restraint Laws
Yes, New Jersey does impose car seat laws, but with only one slight exemption:Children younger than eight years old who weigh fewer than 80 pounds must be properly secured in either a child safety seat or a booster in the rear seat of the car; however, the child may sit in the front seat only if there is no rear seat.
Car Seat Safety Laws
In addition to the law described above there are two other NJ car seat requirements, but without exemptions:- Riders younger than eight who top 80 pounds must be secured with a seat belt.
- Riders between the ages of eight and 18, regardless of weight or height, must ride with a secured seat belt.
For more information about car seats, read chapter three of the NJ drivers manual. You can grab a copy, at no charge, from any MVC office. Or, if you prefer, you download it from the MVC website.
