Remove Your IL License Plates After Car Donation

A vehicle donation is just like a car sale in that you must remove the license plates. It is illegal in Illinois to have someone else drive with a license plate or license plates registered in your name. The plates belong to the owner and not the vehicle.

After removing the plates you then have the option of transferring them to another new or used car owned by you, provided it is of the same class. You cannot, for example, transfer car plates to a motorcycle. If you don't intend on transferring, destroy the plates.

Procedure to Donate a Car

You keep the license plates following a car donation, but you do not keep the title. You'll need to properly sign this over to the charity of your choice. To do so, include the following information on the title:

  • The vehicle's odometer reading.
  • The charity's name. Do not write in the name of an individual who works for the charity.
  • Your signature and date.
Though not required, you should consider completing a bill of sale for your own records. After handing over the title and removing the plates your work in the donate car process is finished. You do not need to notify the IL Secretary of State unless you plan to transfer the license plates.

Charities for Car Donations

For help in finding a charity that will accept donations of used cars, contact your local Better Business Bureau. It can provide listings of all the charities in your area that accept car donations.
