Notifying the State of Car Donations

You are not required to notify the IL Secretary of State (SOS) of a vehicle donation. Regarding titles, the entire title transfer process is simple; no different than if you were selling the used car to another person. This means you're the seller and charity is the buyer.

Under this scenario you must sign over the car title by:

  • Completing the title's odometer section.
  • Filling in the name of the charity.
  • Signing and dating.
Before handing over the keys to complete the car donation, be sure to remove the license plates. In Illinois the plates belong to the owner and not the vehicle. You are allowed to transfer the plates to any other new or used cars, provided you're the owner and it's the same class of vehicle.

If you choose to transfer you'll have to register the new vehicle with the SOS. Otherwise, if you choose not to transfer, destroy the plates.

Deciding on a Charity for a Car Donation

If you want to donate a car but don't have an exact charity in mind, go online and search under "Illinois Car Charities." Or, better yet, contact your local Better Business Bureau for recommendations.

When deciding, take into consideration the following factors:

  • Will you receive a tax credit for your vehicle donation?
  • How will the money generated by your vehicle be used by the charity?
  • Will the money be used locally or nationally?
  • Does the charity provide free pick-up service as part of its donate car process?
