Transferring Titles During Car Donations

To simplify the title transfer process for a car donation, imagine that you're the seller and the charity of your choice is the buyer. Treat it like a regular car sale between two individual parties, minus, of course, payment.

To properly donate a car you must sign over the car title by:

  • Completing the title's odometer section.
  • Adding the name of the charity (the buyer). Be sure to write the charity's exact name and not the name of an individual working for the charity.
  • Signing and datin the title.
Before handing over the car keys, be sure to remove the vehicle's license plates. In Illinois the license plates belong to the owner and not the vehicle. IL will allow you to transfer the plates to another new or used car provided it's owned by you and is the same class of vehicle. You cannot, for example, transfer car plates to a motorcycle.

If you decide not to transfer, destroy the plates. If you receive a registration renewal notice for the vehicle you donated, don't panic. You do not have to respond. Ignore the notice and throw away.

Finding Vehicle Donation Charities

If you can't decide on a charity, go online and search under "Illinois Car Donations." Or, check with your local Better Business Bureau.

When deciding on a charity, consider the following:

  • What kinds of used cars will the charity accept?
  • How will the money generated by your car donation be used by the charity?
  • Will your donation translate into a tax deduction?
  • Does the charity offer free pick-up service as part of its donate car process?
