If your application is accepted you'll be sent special window tint license plates, featuring the letters "WT." In addition to displaying these plates, you must also carry in your vehicle at all times the certification letter or statement authored by your physician. Your exemption certification must be renewed annually. This requires resubmitting an auto tinting exemption application and a new certification statement from your doctor.
NOTE: The Tinted Window Certification application can be downloaded from the Secretary of State's website.
Tint Laws and Safety Laws
Illinois does not mandate annual safety inspections. This means you cannot be denied vehicle registration due to illegal window tinting. This does not, however, make you immune from being fined. An initial tinting charge carries a fine of no less than $50. The minimum penalty jumps to $100 for a second violation and is treated as a Class C misdemeanor. If you head into Chicago be forewarned that the penalty for illegal auto tinting there starts at $250.
